Tamiya Keen Hawk Buggy Looks Like Fun In Dirt

An off-road vehicle built to strut its stuff in competitive buggy races, the Tamiya Keen Hawk serves as an attractive "alternative" for fanatic dirt drivers the world over.   If you're familiar with Tamiya's Dark Impact, this vehicle is largely a rebranding (with mere minor differences) - albeit, an exciting one, nonetheless.

Sporting an awkward-looking pre-trimmed shell, crowned by a large rear wing and attention-grabbing white wheels, this buggy brings along an unusual appearance that you're likely to either love or hate.  It comes as a kit (assembly time of give or take 5 hours), with logos and decals bundled in the package (no paint, though).   Some folks say it brings a slight resemblance to F1 racers, although it's really a distinct-looking ride all on its own.

Use over rough and uneven landscapes will allow the Keen Hawk to demonstrate the durability inherent in its DF-03 chassis, which fosters an excellent functioning balance.  Before this 1/10th scale off-roader was released, Tamiya hasn't had a racing-capable buggy in a long time, making it an eventful release of sorts.

It ships with a Type 540 motor, which should make for respectable speeds during use.  The layout of the car is very interesting, with the battery pack down the center and the transverse-mounted motor just behind it.  This keeps the weight at the center line, allowing you to achieve optimal leveling while performing jumps.  Cornering is predictable but fair, grip is a little lacking and the shocks require a bit of tuning.  You will likely want to take advantage of upgrade options if you want to post top results in actual competition.

Overall, the Tamiya Keen Hawk is a fair choice for a racing buggy.  It's far from the best in the land, but remains a competitive starter kit that you can build on for a sharper edge down the line.

The Kyosho Ultima DB is a new buggy based off racers that competed at events in the Baha area.  It's a throwback to the days of pipe-framed buggies, giving it that attractive, old-school appearance.

Boasting a chassis based on the Ultima SC and performance traits lifted off the Ultima RT5, it's both a backyard basher and a racing specimen in one.  Better still, this 1/9 scale comes out of the box ready to run, allowing you to waste no time in getting things rolling.  It comes with a pre-assembled chassis, pre-painted body and  a full set of electronics, requiring only a battery to run.

Power is provided by a stock, fan-cooled G20 motor, which should prove a decent performer, especially if you intend to push this hard in successive races.  The vehicle is compatible with NiMh 8.4V (7cell) packs.  Do note that the G20 is an excellent motor for longer-running races, as it can manage to stay cool even under duress.

Durability traits include a carbon-fiber composite chassis, strategic braces molded into the chassis, impact resistant bumpers (front, rear and sides), sealed gear box and tactically-mounted shock tower and shocks (to keep mass low).  Notable features include a three-gear transmission (with heavy-duty SP idler gear),  a low-mounted motor (allowing for better bump handling), modified steering assembly (eliminating bump steer) and threaded composite shocks.

On the paper, the Kyosho Ultima DB seems like an excellent scale buggy with downright realistic looks.  It's tough to gauge how it will actually perform, but if Kyosho parts are easy to come by in your area, there's no reason not to give this a try.  Looks exciting.  It's slated for availability in March.
