Kyosho just announced a new model in the Ultima line, which they are billing as "the car to beat for the 2010 season." Called the Kyosho Ultima RB5 SP2 Edition, the buggy features enhancements that the company describes as a "further development of the breed."

The 1/10th scale vehicle comes with the laundry list of standard features that fans will recognize from past Ultima models: carbon composite chassis, externally-adjustable three-gear transmission, low-profile rear shock tower (which improves both cornering ability and crash damage), silky smooth triple cap shocks, hard rod ends and all the usual goodies. It gets a ton of upgrades and new features too.

Noteworthy additions include revised rear suspension arms (2mm longer than the original buggy), updated rear suspension mounts and a medium-sized step wing for better overall control. It also boasts a new sword body, with chiseled lines, flowing sections and bold styling. Kyosho claims the body modifications provide greater downforce, increased traction and better stability at high speeds.

Filled with enhancements tested by Jared Tebo and other notable RC drivers, the Kyosho Ultima RB5 SP2 will be available as kit (radio, servo, motor, ESC, tires and battery not included). No pricing yet, but expect it in stores sometime in May.

Width: 249mm
Length: 380mm
Height: 140mm
Wheelbase (max): 270mm

MCD RR V4

Since 2004, the Race Runner has been the flagship model for MCD Racing.  For 2010, the successful line is continued by the MCD Road Runner V4, which boasts 50 new parts and innovations that bring more than cosmetic changes to the previous RR EVO3.

Available in Competition and Sport versions, the RR V4 is a hot-looking piece of ride, with a  rugged, angular body and excellent pre-applied design.   The wing not only looks better than last generation's, but it's also adjustable.   Both the black wheels and 180mm compound tires look gnarly too.

MCD promises that most parts have been ruggedized a little extra, starting with the lightweight alloy chassis that they claim has been tested over all ground types.  Designed to survive, it boasts “comprehensive countermeasures at key points” to guarantee it keeps the vehicle together over any conditions.  The wide form allows more flexible positioning for the drivetrain and electronics too, making for better handling balance.

The big story here is how purposeful the updates are - each one has been geared towards really improving the overall ride.   From the newly designed front/rear towers to the extra bracing to the lower/upper wishbones to the upper steering servo brace, this looks like an overhauled ride and miles better than its predecessor.  Available in Sport and Competition versions, do expect to shell out premium cash - the MCD Road Runner V4 can be one costly racer.

bajaSS

Hailed as one of the best RC cars released in 2008, the HPI Baja 5B SS is as powerful a buggy as you can ask for.  This particular kit brought the Baja platform to new heights, bringing tons of improvements that enhanced its speed, power and durability.

Sure to appeal to fans who love to tinker with their cars, the kit allows for plenty of customizations to your Baja buggy racer's looks.  The clear body shell leaves itself a blank canvas, allowing you to slap up your choice of paints and designs, using the included pre-cut decals and protective overspray film.

The Baja 5B SS comes with a gunmetal-anodized monocoque main chassis that appears absolutely nasty under the body, all while providing a rigid base for superior performance.  Orange anodized Super Sport parts complement the chassis, leaving it even more durable and better-looking.

Power is delivered from a Fuelie 26s gasoline engine, paired with an aluminum tube pipe, delivering faster acceleration and higher top speeds than other desert buggies before it.  Working together with the 750cc gasoline tank (which holds enough fuel to see you through 40 to 45 minute runs) and an 8000 RPM clutch (for a quick push during a standing start), it should see you blow through the pack in even the most competitive races.  Other notable hop-ups include a new rear shock tower brace, heavy-duty shock set, metal gear steering and ultra-responsive sway bars.

To put it simply, the HPI Baja 5B SS Kit can't be recommended enough.  It remains as one of the best buggies in the scene and totally deserves all the praise it has received over the past two years.

HPI Baja 5B RTR

HPI-Baja-5B-RTR

HPI's Baja 5B RTR is an off-road sand buggy (in contrast to the HPI Baja 5T, which is a desert truck) that's built in the tradition of the top Baja 1000 racing vehicles.  First released in 2006, it spurred plenty of interest in large-scale RCs, a direct result of its realistic on-road performance.

Following the lead of classic Baja buggies, the 1/5th scale model provides long suspension arms and large travel, allowing for plenty of ground clearance with no consequence on quickness.  To allow for the extended suspension arms, the 5B uses an extra-strong narrow channel chassis made from a rigid 4mm aluminum alloy.

This authentic driving durability, combined with the unquestionably genuine appearance, makes this RC one of the most compelling desert riders even three years after its release.  Of course, it's aided greatly by the brilliantly-painted body shell, buggy-standard Dirt Buster tires and classically-styled high-impact nylon roll cage, all of which come together to complete the vehicle's overall look.

With a pre-installed 23cc "Fuelie" gasoline engine, the Baja 5B RTR starts in a jiffy and dispenses enough power to impress.  Despite the size (it's huge at close to 32 inches), you'll find yourself comparing the quickness to buggies that are barely half its length.  It can race for a good half hour on a full tank of petrol.

A huge 25 kg-cm steering servo ensures quick steering prowess, even over wet sand areas.  You will enjoy uninterrupted control of you buggy from afar with the high-quality TF-10 FM radio gear, which works interference-free and offers extended range support. A battery indicator sits on the console so you can monitor your vehicle's battery life in real time.

For those in search of optimum sand performance in a ride, the HPI Baja 5B RTR is the real deal.  If you've ever fancied running around like those Baja 1000 buggies, this is as authentic an experience as you can find in a model car.
